Results 2023-24 season
The progress of the Science on a Comet project is disclosed below, describing the main results obtained from monitoring during the 2023-2024 season:
Sightings
Fixed point
Officially, the observation season from a fixed point began on November 29, ending on March 15. In this period, 53 monitoring were recorded between the places intended for this purpose, with a count of 69 sightings.
Sightings
Moving point
The observation season from a boat began on December 10, ending on March 31. In this period of time, 98 days of monitoring and 179 sightings were recorded.
Catalog of
foto-identification
Of the total record of sightings of humpback whales through boat monitoring, 39 individuals were identified through the photo-identification technique, using only photographs of the caudal fin.
In some cases, during the sighting it was not possible to take a photograph of the caudal fin of the individuals. In this case, there is a record of dorsal fins, which could help photo-identification in the following winter migration season of the humpback whale.

Wounded or
collision-damaged whaled
During the monitoring by boat this season, specimens of humpback whales have been observed on occasions with marks of wounds or mutilations on their caudal fin.
The concentration of boats, the non-compliance with the established distances or the lack of speed control of the boats are factors that can affect the physical well-being of these large mammals, hence the great importance of generating greater awareness among the sector that offers this type of tourist service, the local community and occasional visitors.
From our field of action we want to contribute by making a special mention about the sightings of individuals who presented this type of marks, with the purpose of opening and continuing in the coming seasons a line of work on this issue, providing information and reports on human impacts on marine life.
